Local Body Elections

Nelson City has a new-look City Council. Its new mayor, Mr Trevor Home, unseated the Mayor for the last six years, Mr Doug Strawbridge, and with seven of the old council not seeking re-election, the council table now seats seven new councillors. No sitting councillor was defeated.

The swing against Mr Strawbridge, is unaccountable. Both have had considerable experience in local body administration. Mr Horne had been a councillor for 12 years, and Mr Strawbridge, as well as holding the mayoralty for six years, was a city councillor for 4½ years and a Waimea county councillor for 7½ years. It is to be regretted that this experience is now lost to the city for the next three years, at least.

The referendum on fluoridating the city water favoured opponents of the project.
