The Nelson Photo News

About the Nelson Photo News

The first run of the Nelson Photo News is a rare and unique photographic record of life in Nelson in the early 1960’s and 1970’s — a time of rapid social and cultural change. The publication captures personal and community events through photographs and lively commentary.

The inaugural editor and main photographer for the digitized issues on this site was Barry Simpson for the years 1960 to 1970. Peter Skinner followed as editor from 1970 to 1972.

The Friends of the Nelson Library Microfilm Subcommittee arranged funding and commissioned the digitization with funds coming from several grants including a DigitalNZ grant, as well as donations from individuals.

Friends of the Nelson Library Microfilm Subcommittee is composed of members from Friends of the Nelson Library Inc., Nelson Public Libraries: Nga Whare Matauranga o Whakatu, Nelson Provincial Museum: Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao, Nelson Historical Society, The Nelson Institute and the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists.

Digitization, marking up, hosting and technical advice is provided by meBooks, Wellington, New Zealand. Original issues are available at Nelson Public Libraries, Nelson Provincial Museum or the National Library of New Zealand.
