Sporting Roundup

The winter sports season got away to a grand start, with perfect weather and firm yet not rock-hard grounds. On the day that most sports opened their competitions, we went run-about to capture on film something of the Rugby, men's and women's hockey, basketball and winter bowling.

The Rugby season got away to a good opening, with Nelson, Celtic and Waimea scoring wins over Old Boys, Stoke and Rivals respectively. Celtic, fresh from its triumph of winning the South Island Catholic clubs' shield, romped home 40-nil against Stoke. At left are four players we selected from the games we saw, and whom we commend.

×

Graham Young, a fast flanker for Celtic, who recovered from a serious injury three season ago and is playing solid Rugby. At right, S. Kotua, a son of Maori All Black, N. Kotua, who gave a Mac Herewini display at first five-eighths for Stoke. This young player has tremendous potential.

Leon Hunia, Old Boys prop, put a terrific effort into his play and featured in several foreeful runs. Another player with potential is Merrin Hodgson, Nelson first five-eighths. Hodgson did not play much Rugby last year, but he should be a great aid to Nelson this year. One comment on the opening games- -in both games we saw, too often the ball was kicked when support was at hand.
