Apple Packing Titles

The annual Moutere Hills, apple packing and apple quality titles were contested before a huge audience in the Mapua Hall two weeks ago. This annual event, the highlight of the fruit-picking season, drew entries from workers in orchards throughout the district. The standard and speed of contestants were uniformly high. The competition was tough, and several new champions came to light. One such was Bill Rush (Tasman), top left, who beat Lorna Paynter, last year's open winner. Men's champion was Stuart Tucker (far left), with Dan Strong runner-up (at left). Below are Lorna Paynter (women's champion), Glenice Williams (Australia), novice champion, and Ted Jones, who accepted the Fraser Cup for the case of apples packed for show purposes, for winner P. R. Hoddy. Admiring the Fraser Cup and the apples that won the cup for Mr Hoddy (top) are Richard Langford (Mapua), and James and Keith Thawley (Mahana). At bottom left are Judy Aldred (England) and Patricia Spark (Greymouth) who packed the apples which gave A. T. Sloan the Brash Cup. (Pix by Peter Cooper Studio).
