Scouts at work oh rabbit island

Rabbit Island has been, and still is, a wonderful source of revenue for the Waimea County Council, but the care of the hundreds of thousands of pine trees which cover the island is just a little too big a job for caretaker Ira Heath and his assistant. So in the school holidays the council employs boys to help out with the pruning, and this year members of the Stoke Scout troop made camp and took over the job. And what a camp! Rough and ready it may have been, but the boys ate well (and long) and thoroughly enjoyed their working holiday.

Lunch time and everybody – that is, Paddy Ralfe, Alistair ("Moose") Paterson, Kevin Friis, Peter Thompson, Michael O'Carroll, Wayne ("Injun") Redditt, Kevin Harte, George Matson, John Renwick and Stephen Nicholls – gets stuck in to the eats.
