The Fabulous "Minstrels"

Some of the most-used words in advertising touring shows are "spectacular", "fabulous", "amazing" and many other superlatives designed to draw a full house. The same words were used in advertising the "Black and white Minstrel Show", but for the first time, we felt, mere words could not do justice to the show. It was fabulous and spectacular – the lighting, the costumes, the sets, the singing and the smoothness with which the whole show was run. Without a doubt, the best to come to Nelson. Our congratulations to Hugh Richards, Majestic manager, who prevailed upon the Minstrels to make an unscheduled stop at Nelson. Evidently the Minstrels themselves were pleased they came to Nelson. They played to near-full houses for six nights as well as a couple of matinees.

We weren't able to get any pics of the show itself – a question of royalties or something – but we did get some pix of the behind-the-scenes workers to give you an idea of just what was involved in producing a show like this. Above is a publicity pic supplied to us showing the cast on stage as we saw them and at right an empty theatre and a stage in the process of being set up for the show.
