Fire Engines Made To Measure

Anybody want to buy a fire engine? Then the man to see is Roy Chapman. For some time now Roy's firm has been importing the fire engine chassis and building up the body to suit individual brigade's requirements. Recently Roy wrote to the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board protesting at the board's unfavourable comparison of the quality and price of locally assembled engines with those imported from England. What's more, he won a point, for the board is to seek an investigation into standardising the bodies of engines. He pointed out to "Photo News" that if bodies were standardised, building costs could be cut.

His firm has already completed engines for brigades at Queenstown and Invercargill and it is at present working on a similar machine for Motueka (above). At left can be seen the pump unit on the machine, around which the body is being built.
