Seddon Shield Challenges Repulsed

Since winning the Seddon Shield in the mud at Greymouth, the Nelson team has defended the trophy successfully twice (at the time of going to press). A big crowd saw Nelson slither to victory in slush against Marlborough by 6 points to nil and two weeks later it had a more convincing 21-6 win over Golden Bay-Motueka.

In all three games played this season Mike Delany has done more than his share towards securing victory. In scoring another 12 pts. against Golden Bay, Mike brought his tally to 24.

The Nelson forwards looked sluggish in comparison with the Bays pack in the first half of this game, and it was not surprising that Nelson held only a 5-3 lead at half time the goal resulting from the one outstanding movement of the game. In the second half the Nelson forwards played with more verve and the backs looked a better combination. But there were still too many mistakes on Nelson's part - particularly tackling - and these will need to be eradicated if the last challenger of the season, a strong Buller side, is to be defeated.
