The End of a Banking Era

For 98 years the building below served as one of Nelson's best-known banking houses. Built originally for the Union Bank of Australia, the old building has more recently been used by the Australia and New Zealand Bank. Now it is being demolished to make way for what bank officials say will be an "ultra-modern" bank. Until that day the bank is carrying on business in the adjoining building, erected originally as the bank manager's house. Later this also will be demolished.
