Flight Into the Heaphy
Hundreds of people have walked the Heaphy Track, crossing numerous streams and fighting sandflies. But there is an easier way of getting to the Heaphy - fly there. About 20 years ago Sgt Noel Oxnam, of the Nelson police, and a friend made an extensive walk through the area prospecting for uranium. More recently Sgt Oxnam visited the region again, this time by air. "It's a lot easier than walking, " he concedes. Sgt Oxnam, left, and Nelson Aero Club instructor, Bryce Nairn, discuss the merits of aviation while strolling on the Heaphy strip. In the foreground, on a log, is a reminder that people still walk the track - a worn-out boot.
