This mighty marlin was stranded on the northern end of Nine Mile Beach near Westport. The head was cut off the 14ft body which drifted away. Graham Alexander of Carters Beach took this shot of Matthew Alexander hanging on to the fish's bill

Again a fishy story. This time it's an oarfish which is nine feet long. It was stranded at Delaware Bay. Eighteen inches of the fish's tail are missing. Museum curator, Jim Eyles, shown here with the oarfish, said they sometimes come into shallow water in winter

Winner of the Nelson regional finals of the Jaycee Teenage Driver of the Year contest was Colin Nitsen, 17, of Marlborough, left. With Colin are national Jaycee president, Brian Mills, Rodney Pegg, Motueka, who was second and John King, Richmond, third. The three boys will contest the national final in Dunedin on September 25

Meet Jean Claude Canuel who recently opened Kanuk Traders Ltd. Not knowing what Kanuk meant we asked Mr Canuel, who is a French Canadian. Kanuk means Canadian but only in slang.
