Nelson's new parking meter officer with the Ministry of Transport is Pauline Whitham. Pauline came to Nelson from Hanmer Springs five years ago. She was educated at Timaru Girls' High School, and her great leisure interest is motoring.

This very cheerful looking character is Hugh Blanchfield, a baker with G.B.H. Bakeries at Stoke. Hugh has been a baker since he was 14. He spent the early part of his life in Greymouth (his brother Paddy is Member of Parliament for Westland), then operated a bakery in Takaka before coming to live in Nelson. He's married, with a family of three, and his prime interests are swimming and poultry raising.

It's logical, we suppose, for a girl selling sweets to have a sweet smile. The smile belongs to Catherine Bruce, a shop assistant with the Avon Dairy, Stoke. Catherine is married, with a little boy of S months. She lives in Richmond (coming originally from Greymouth 11 years ago), and was educated at Waimea College. Her interests include knitting, pot plants and cooking.

While in the G.B.H. bakery at Stoke, we chanced upon Elva Woods who, according to her immediate boss, is "the best cake finisher in Nelson". Elva has been at the bakery for five months, coming to Nelson from Oxford a year ago. She is married and has two children and her interests include fishing, gardening, floral work and sewing.

On the staff of the South British Insurance Co. in Nelson we found Lewis De Cesare, a clerk, and Margaret Smith, a typist-clerk. Lewis was educated at Nelson College and has been with the firm for two years. He is single, 20, and his hobbies include Rugby, swimming and music. Margaret, who has been with the firm for 2½ years, was educated at Sacred Heart College, Nelson, and is 19 (and single). Her greatest interest is dressmaking.
