Hester Shield Athletics

Nelson retained the Hester Shield for athletics and cycling in the two-stage contest held with Marlborough in December. Nelson romped away to take a commanding lead on the first day at Nelson, but Marlborough came back strongly to take the honours on the second day. These pix were taken during the first day's competition. In the jumping pix Above, winner W. Sinclair (Marl) is at Left, K. Walker (Nel) is Above and R. Ashwell (Marl) takes off at Top Right. Sinclair, also at Right, won the event.

That ole' Southern gen'lman, Gaylord Ravenal, might have been hot stuff on the old Mississippi riverboats, but he would have turned green with shock had he to float down the Maitai River on some of the craft entered in this year's river race run by Nelson Jaycees. Most of the craft defy description, so we won't try. Tremendous fun, enjoyed by a gigantic crowd.
