Radio Chess Match
Members of the Gisborne and Tokoroa Chess Clubs recently had the novel experience of playing each other, with the use of radio, while several hundred miles apart.
In Gisborne, the six local players met at the home of Mr Basil Page, Riverside Road, and settled down, with a complete board each, to the mental tussles of a game of chess. In another room, Mr Page and members of the Amateur Radio Transmitters Club were in radio contact with Tokoroa and were transmitting and receiving the moves as they were made.
Although poor atmospheric conditions at times caused delays, the match was highly successful, and resulted in a victory for Gisborne by 4½ points to 1½.
Players studying their boards are, from left: Messrs. M. P. Grieve, H. J. Toye, W. Boeyan, J. Hofman, J. Holdsworth, and LI. Meredith.
