Dramatic "Rescue" by Waikanae "Ladies"

Spectators at the Nelson Shield winners' demonstration at Waikanae Beach (see page 38), were treated to an outstanding display of well-disciplined courage when the Waikanae "Ladies" Surf Life-saving Club was called to the rescue of a damsel in distress who was floundering in the tide. Unfortunately, the surf proved too strong for the struggling beltman, but "she" battled gamely on, until she was overcome by the pounding seas. By this time, the damsel in distress had apparently become undistressed and went to "her" would-be rescuer's assistance, but, alas, it was too late.

Personnel involved in the rescue were: Ron Campbell (patient), Mark Pickett (beltman), Dick Glover (linesman), and Gary Thompson (reelman).
