Pictures From The Past
We are indebted to Mr J. Hollamby, of Nelson Road, for these and great many other pictures taken in Gisborne about a quarter-century ago...not so far back that a great many of our readers will be able to recall the faces and places.
Our first selection from Mr Hollamby's album is of well-known Gisborne identities.
Two pictures of Tom Nowell, now of Midway Garden Shop, taken in 1939, when he was Gisborne's traffic officer. He is giving instruction to school children.
He is mounted on his Harley-Davidson motor-cycle.
Well known to punters and others was "Murrumbidgie" (Tom Robinson), seen here in characteristic pose outside his shop on his old chair.
Older residents will well-remember "The Peanut King" (George Williams), with his peanut machine.........and the pleasures of buying freshly-roasted peanuts from it. These two views show George having a quiet read...
...and attending to a customer's wants.
