Magnificent scenery

Some day, when the Tourist Department has run out of attractions, a road might be built up the Ruakituri River (about 40 miles due west of Gisborne) to enable the multitudes to view what must surely be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in New Zealand. We refer to the Waitangi Falls, one half of the upper portion of which is pictured above. The Ruakituri will be in the news in due course when the search for oil invades the lower reaches of the valley (drilling is expected to start there when Mangaone is completed), but for those trampers and stalkers who penetrate the upper reaches, the enduring memory of the valley will always be of these beautiful waterfalls.

These pictures were taken by Arthur Norgrove, a member of a party of eight Gisborne Youth Hostel Assn. members who spent Anniversary weekend in the Ruakituri.
In the closely-walled gorge above the falls, Arthur took this remarkable picture showing some members of the party (right) watching a deer (to left of large rock) clambering out of the river.

On a later Y.H.A. trip, this was the successful party which reached the summit of Mount Honokawa, 25 miles west of Ruatoria.
