Trawler Aground at Te Araroa

Holed in the side after she struck a reef near East Cape last month, the Auckland trawler Ava limped into Te Araroa and beached for repairs, creating much interest among local inhabitants. She stayed for a day while temporary repairs were carried out, and then left for Auckland under her own power.

The Ava came in with her engines three-parts submerged but still working. A pump was flown in by amphibian plane, and with this the ship was cleared of water so that repairs could be carried out. (Pictures from Bryan Lockett).
