Needless to say this truck came to a sudden stop when it hit a load of heavy bridge beams near the foot of Kaiteratahi Hill, a hundred yards or so from the Kaiteratahi Hotel. The beams were being trucked out of a side road coming from the old Waipaoa railway bridge, now partially dismantled. The truck at right (driven by Peter Pollard with John Lister as passenger) was proceeding north on the main road. They were taken to hospital with superficial injuries. The driver of the other truck, Johannes Hardenbol, was not injured.

Another truck in trouble, but this one was hit by a river. When the big flood came down the Awatere River at Te Araroa recently, it caught Beattie Construction's bridge building machinery unprepared and overflowed the lot. When the water went down the machinery was much the worse for wear, as shown in these pics sent in by Mr E. W. Barbara, Te Araroa.
