Summer Came Late

For much of this summer, Gisbornites were inclined to wonder why it should be called by that name. Traditionally, the local summer is nearly six months long, and so dry and hot that rain is a relief. But this season all was back to front, like Alice in the Looking Glass, and it seemed that the rain would never stop falling. Then two or three weeks ago, the clouds cleared away, the sun came out hot and strong, and people began catching up on arrears of swimming and sun-bathing. It was more like old times, as these pictures show.
