The Autumn Carnival

On one of the hottest days of the season, thousands flocked to the showgrounds last Saturday for the annual Autumn Carnival. A happy holiday spirit was evident throughout. Deferring to the temperature, Dame Fashion was informal to the extreme--it was certainly a day for shirt sleeves and sun-frocks.

Trotting races by a team from the Waikato were the highlights of the programme, on the newly-extended track, and patrons were able to enjoy a flutter on the Equalisator. In addition, there were polo games, sheep dog trials, Highland dancing, children's relay races, a "needle-in-the-haystack" contest, go-karts, and many other attractions.
