Exhibition Golf

Shortly before their departure to play for New Zealand at Philadelphia, Stan Jones, Ross Newdick and Walter Godfrey, with the former Gisborne player, Frank Gordon, played an exhibition four-ball golf match at the Awapuni links. Gordon and Jones took an early lead and after the first 18 were 1 up. The Auckland pair were unable to make up this deficit in the second round and lost 3 and 1.

A large gallery on each day was treated to some magnificent golf, especially from Jones, Newdick and Gordon. Godfrey, still affected by air sickness and handicapped by a new set of irons, was out of touch, particularly with his tee shots. He was, also, the only one of the four who had not played on the course previously.

Stroke scores for each player were: Newdick, 74, 72-146; Jones, 73, 74-147; Gordon, 75, 79-154; Godfrey, 77, 78-155. Newdick did not start very well but from the 10th on the first day to the 16th on the second day he was 4 under scratch.

Even a top-flight golfer like Godfrey can get into situations like this.
