Young Hockey Players

The hockey season just ended has seen two major innovations. The first of these is the development of play for schoolgirls for the first time, with Mrs F. Poole and Hani Smiler as coaches. The local rep. team competed in the Napier-Wairoa-P.B. tournament at Wairoa recently and took top honours. The boys, coached by Len Roderick, travelled away to take part in a national tournament for the first time this season, to compete for the Hatch Cup at Nelson.

The "Flying Saucers" show how to follow the ball, with Kate Smith (extreme right) in the lead.

Mona Tupara is both the mascot and the comedienne of the team, and is giving the camera the raspberry in the team picture (opposite page), but on the field this tiny tot belies her size. She can really hit that ball!

In the boys' game B. Campbell and T. Corlett battle for the ball, with Campbell getting the upper hand.
