Canoeing Down
The River

Thrills and spills were all part of the game when the Gisborne Canoeing and Tramping Club held singles and doubles canoe races down eight miles of the Waimata River, starting near Holden's Hill, and finishing at the War Memorial.

In the singles events, the winners were N. Openshaw (juniors), I. Openshaw (intermediate) and W. McConnell (seniors). Fastest time went to I. Openshaw, who completed the distance in 1hr 20min 21 sec.

In the doubles race held on a later Saturday, the winners were R. Openshaw and P. Newton, in 1hr 9min 27sec.
