Survey work for Oil
Pictures on this page show seismic reflection survey work in progress in the vicinity of Gisborne as part of the oil exploration survey being carried out by the BP Shell and Todd Petroleum Development Ltd. organisation.
Mobile drilling crew preparing shot holes up to 60ft deep.
Loading the shot holes with sticks of dynamite, which (inset) are seen being wired.
"Shot" is fired to produce shock waves which are reflected back to surface from underground rock layers and picked up by lines of microphones on the ground.
Instrument truck records echoes picked up by microphones on to sensitised paper so that underground rock structure can be plotted.
