Midget Cars Thrill Crowd

Something new hit Gisborne last Saturday when the boys from Te Awamutu arrived with a truckload of midget racing cars, and before a large audience at the Showgrounds demonstrated just how thrilling this sport can be. Although the little cars do not travel much faster than the motor-cycles, they put on a much more spectacular show, as these pictures indicate.

The visitors are members of a club which races at Kihikihi, a short distance south of Te Awamutu.

As a result of the meeting, an effort is being made to get a similar club going here.

Pictures taken during some of the events. In spite of high speed and sideways cornering, it seemed impossible for the little cars to overturn.

Two more pictures of the cars in action. In the picture at right, driver is fouling markers, one of which can be seen in the air.

The meeting here was sponsored by the Gisborne Motor–Cycle Club.

A close–up of the cars. They are built mostly from Austin 7 parts, with 500cc. motorcycle engines, some single–cylinder and some twin–cylinder. They have locked differentials and no clutches. Cost to an enthusiast who can build his own is between £120 and £150. Low centre of gravity (the driver is sitting only an inch or two from the ground) makes them extremely hard to turn over.
