The Singer Trophy

The Singer Trophy, donated by Dr.A. L. Singer in 1942 to encourage endurance swimming, requires entrants for this annual event to swim four widths of the harbour basin in their clothes, more or less. In one length they have to swim on their backs with their arms folded, in another push a board in front as they frog–leg through the water.

The race last Saturday called for additional fortitude. A chilly westerly wind found spectators huddled in overcoats ns three tough young fellows and one hardy girl took to the water (below).
