More Bridge Trouble

"Gisborne, City of Bridges" is one name the city enjoys in tourist booklets.

But lately, bridges have become the bane of the council and the ratepayers.

Three years ago, the William Pettie bridge was closed to car traffic. It still is. This year, the Roebuck Road bridge was found to be unsafe and was closed.

Now defects which may cost from £3000 to £5000 to fix have shown up in Gladstone Road bridge. Repair work has been given urgent priority.

Trouble has been caused by steel expansion plates at pier ends "welding" together, so that excessive expansion and contraction at bridge ends has damaged abutments.
