Farewells At Darton Field

Crowds gathered twice in a week at Darton Field to wave their goodbyes as NAC planes roared away from the tarmac.

The first occasion was on July 14, when the Fijian Rugby team left after a week here. In that week they had proved themselves joyous and worthy ambassadors of their country, they had made a great many friends, and they had given 10,000 Rugby fans the memory of one of the happiest games of football ever seen in this country.

The second occasion, on July 18, was clouded with overtones of sadness for many people. In hospitals, in homes for the elderly, at socials for the blind and the deaf, Mrs Elliott, long and lovingly known as "Aunt Daisy," was leaving behind her a gap which nobody else could fill. The time had come for her to join her family in Brisbane, after 23 years in Gisborne. Nobody could count the number of boys and girls who, in 20 years at Station 2XM, had been encouraged by her to play, or sing, or recite. They might well be numbered not in hundreds, but in thousands.
