New Land For Farming

It needs no repetition that the standard of living of all New Zealanders depends primarily on the country's farming industry. The more land which can be brought into production, the better off everybody is.

These pictures show scrub land on the property of Mr and Mrs T. P. Horne, "Rotongaio Station", Putere (41 miles west of Wairoa) being given modern treatment by bulldozer and giant discs. The contractor, Mr Barney Walker, Gisborne, has the job of flattening and cutting up great stands of manuka up to 20ft high. After burning off, the land reclaimed will be sown down next summer, will soon be carrying profitable harvest of sheep.

Mr Horne, who lives at Hexton, estimates that this year he will bring 200 acres into production. As for Mr Walker, he reckons there is enough of this kind of work within reach of Gisborne to keep him going for years.
