Carols By Candlelight

With the war memorial across the river floodlit, and the weather on its best behaviour, the annual Carols by Candlelight evening organised by the Gisborne Y.M.C.A. was an occasion to be remembered. On the Read's Quay side of the Turanganui River hundreds of people, each with a candle, joined in the singing of the carols, led by band and choir. Over the river, a series of Christmas tableaux was acted out by a group of seventeen young people in the memorial lighting, providing an engaging new feature for the occasion.
