Where The Lambs Grow Better

Photos on this page were taken on the farm of Mr James Atkins, Patutahi, one of the district's outstanding breeders of fine quality Southdown Cross sheep. Drafting lambs for competition entries is quite a business, requiring a lifetime of knowledge and a discerning eye, and here Mr Atkins is seen selecting a lamb from the flock and weighing it on scales near the pens.

When it comes to exhibiting lambs in competition, Mr Atkins must have a record without parallel in this district. In the annual contest for three lambs most suitable for the English market, he has won the cup nine times. For six years in succession he took the Continuance Challenge Cup for fat lamb classes in the district lamb competition, and in classes judged at Smithfield he has won most points for fat lambs seven times. All told he has won 26 championships in shows and competitions, and 24 reserve championships.
