Norman Walks A Country Mile

×

Highlight of the athletic meeting held at the Chiders Road Reserve during the holidays was an exhibition mile walk by the Olympic gold medallist, Norman Read. Norman apparently resolved to give a true exhibition of the form he showed at Melbourne, even though it might have seemed to him, after the big games, something in the nature of a "country mile".

The world's champion road-walker gave it all he had and recorded the second-best mile he had ever done on grass. Time, 6min 55.5sec. It was a flawless performance, and it earned a big hand from the crowd.
It also earned for Norman the inevitable task of signing autographs (above), and when that was done we lined up the Olympic champion with the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, and another famous wearer of the coveted fernleaf, All Black Richard White.

Among the Olympians seen that day at the reserve were Murray Halberg, New Zealand's fastest miler, and Valerie Sloper, the champion shotputter from Canterbury.

Alan Parkinson, local runner who in this race put up a grand performance, is seen leading Halberg into the last lap of the mile.

Valerie Sloper is a slim young amazon who can pack tremendous energy behind a discus or a heavy metal ball. She put the shot 45ft 10in at Gisborne, and later at Napier beat her own record. Here she is seen in graceful pose as she prepares to throw. and in the other two pictures she turns into a powerhouse of released energy as she sends the shot hurtling through the air.
