Commanding Position

Life Member. Mr F. E. (Fred) Humphreys, "Wilencote," Ngatapa, was made a life member of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand at the federation's Dominion Conference in Wellington in mid-July. Mr Humphreys has given outstanding service to New Zealand farming with particular reference to the Hereford cattle breeding industry. Among many offices held is that of chairman of the Gisborne branch of Federated Farmers for 11 years. He has been a life member of the province since 1968.

Jamboree Trip Three Gisborne Sea Scouts are now on the other side of the globe attending the world Scout Jamboree in Norway. The trip, which is taking two months all told, started in England and will end with a visit to other Scouts in Sweden, plus a tour of Europe, before returning home. The three travellers are, from left Richard Stannard (Kaiti Sea Scouts), Wayne Beattie (Takitimu), and Alan Lewis (Kaiti).

Pictured talking his vessel, H.M.S. Mermaid, into the Naval Base at Singapore is Commander Jim McPhee who is the son of Mrs Lydia McPhee, 24 Cobden Street. Commander McPhee left Gisborne 22 years ago for England to join the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy and in that time has worked his way up to his present position. He is one of the three New Zealand men commissioned in the Royal Navy.
