Big Scale — Small Boy!
Young Grant Hepburn, Steed Avenue, found everything on a really big scale when he had a holiday in Newman, Western Australia, recently, With his mother, Mrs Iris Hepburn, he was visiting his father, Bob Hepburn, who is working on a five-year contract in the Pilbara mining region (see June "Photo News"). These photographs, from Bob Hepburn, depict the vast scale of the area, and life, in Western Australia.
In the 25 degree heat (of winter) Grant Hepburn looks into the gaping bucket of a P & W model mining shovel. The bucket itself weighs 8000lbs empty, while the whole machine weighs out at 800 tons!
During his holiday Grant saw a number of very interesting sights, all on the vast scale of the Australian continent. Here Dales' Gorge plunges 300 feet deep into the earth
A loaded ore train of 138 cars weighing 15,000 tons loaded leaves the Mt Newman mining area for Port Hedland
The largest anthill is a "must see" for travellers in Wittenoom National Park
The chassis of a Haulpak dwarfs Grant Hepburn. The wheel diameter alone is nine feet
