They Could Have Danced all Night

A large crowd of dancers attended the ball which was held to raise funds for the War Memorial Theatre appeal. Williams & Kettle's Wool Store in Awapuni Road was transformed into a Viennese Ballroom with hundreds of yards of drapes, chandeliers and trees.

The "Blue Danube Waltz" floor show was quite spectacular and those participating were joined afterwards by the crowd to try the dance. Playing for the floor show was the Gisborne Civic Orchestra under the conductor-ship of Marios Sophocleous.

During the function the bell from the 'Blackpool' (Gisborne's adopted ship) was presented to the city. Mayor Harry Barker (right) accepts the bell from Rear Admiral E. Thorne, Chief of the N.Z. Naval Staff.
