Fifth in Line

The fifth British ship to carry the name 'Scylla' paid a five-day visit to Gisborne recently. The Leander class frigate is part of the British Task Force (which was on a visit to New Zealand), and has a length of 372 feet, a beam of 43 feet, carries a variety of armament, and is manned by 18 officers and 250 ratings.

Quite a large crowd welcomed the ship where a hose display was turned on by the Gisborne Fire Brigade to mark the ship's arrival.

The Gisborne Civic Band played some appropriate welcoming tunes as the ship berthed.

As the 'Scylla' approached the wharf her piper could be heard from the centre of the ship.

There were many visitors to see the ship but probably none more interested than Kaiti Sea Scout Wayne Bloxham. Wayne, who is the son of Mr and Mrs K. H. Bloxham, 31 De Lautour Road, intends making the navy his career and a close inspection of the. frigate was a great thrill for him.
