Gisborne Grand Prix

Exciting racing will be seen during every event in the first Gisborne Grand Prix, to be held on New Year's Day. Top riders from the U.S.A. (including Paul Smart, Ron Grant and Cal Rabourn, who all ride Suzuki 750s), Malaysia, Indonesia and Great Britain will be competing, as will 118 New Zealand riders. Practices will be held from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m., when the day's racing programme will start, going on until about 4 p.m. The big race of the day, the Limited Grand Prix, is to take place in the middle of the afternoon.

Most of the planning and organisation of the Grand Prix is in the hands of the Gisborne Motor Cycle Sports Club, with various firms sponsoring the prize-money. From left, Graham Ovenden (chief marshal), Ian Kitney (vice-president) and Graeme Randle (secretary).

Most of the area in this picture. will be closed off for the day with admission being charged for entry to the track, where parking will be available. The start and finish line will be in Solander Street, off which will also be the pits. The circuit takes in Solander Street Banks Street, a short part of Stanley Road, Centennial Marine Drive, the Abattoir Cut, Awapuni Road, Lytton Road and back into Solander Street. As can be seen, the track has some tight bends (for skill) and long straights (for speed) so the racing will really be up to world standard.
