New Bush Reserve

Miss Winifred Lysnar has presented ten acres of land at the northern end of Wainui Beach to the Crown. The area, which already contains 4½ acres of pure native bush, will be under the care of the Gisborne section of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. Society members planted more than 300 trees on the reserve recently and this was part of a tree planting programme which will eventually cover most of the ten acres. In the future it is hoped to make part of the flat land available as a picnic area for members of the public.

Miss Lysnar planted the first of the trees, a pohutukawa, with the aid of Mr Archie Blackburn, a committee member of the society.

At a combined public meeting of the Forest and Bird Society and the Conservation Society, Mr Frank Alack gave an illustrated lecture. Mr Alack is a noted naturalist, mountaineer and lecturer and he spoke on his experiences in Antarctica. Mr Alack (right) is pictured with Mr Blackburn.
