Donkey Days

A recent visitor to Gisborne was a former resident, Mr Percy Lowndes, 83. In the late 1920s and early '30s Mr Lowndes had a team of donkeys which were a familiar sight around Gisborne. They were used for children's rides and promotional work around the town. Mr Lowndes is a cousin of Mr Colin Lowndes, father of Vanessa Lowndes who gave her name to the Abilities Workshop. Before taking on the donkeys Mr Lowndes farmed at Hexton. After 10 years or so in Gisborne, with the donkeys he moved to Eastbourne, near Wellington, where he still lives.
