Messrs Tom Tamatea, Bert Green and Tom Ward were pig hunting off the Old Motu Road when their dogs disturbed this kiwi. The men caught the kiwi and saved it from the dogs which, fortunately, hadn't harmed it. After proving that they had actually seen one of this country's national birds, the men returned the kiwi to its native habitat.
