Mrs Wai Armstrong (nee Purei) paid a return visit to Gisborne and Te Karaka, to visit relations and friends before leaving for Indonesia with her husband, Lieutenant-Colonel A. Armstrong. They will spend about three years at Bandung, where Lt-Col Armstrong will be 1st New Zealand Officer to the Indonesian Higher Command Staff College there. Mrs Armstrong, a grand-daughter of the late Sir Apirana Ngata, was born and bred in the district, being educated in Gisborne. She was a Petty Officer in the Wrens, from 1956 to 1961, and completed her air hostess training in 1962, shortly after which she became check and training hostess. Mrs Armstrong was selected as air hostess for the King and Queen of Thailand, on their flights during their New Zealand visit. This will be the Armstrong s second tour of duty in the Far East. Mrs Armstrong (right) is pictured with her aunt, Mrs Lorna Ngata.
