70 Years Married

A fantastic record of 70 years of married life belongs to Mr and Mrs W. J. Bright, 10 Bulwer Road. A family party gathered at Cook Hospital, where Mr Bright is a patient, to cut the anniversary cake. Mr Bright was born in Waiuku and came to Gisborne in 1896 at the age of 21. After marrying Mrs Bright, who was the former Mrs Elizabeth Hansen, he was first a blacksmith at Te Karaka for seven years. After that the Brights in turn had the Motu Hotel, farmed at Motu, then Ngatapa, had a store at Whangara (which was destroyed by fire) and then farmed at Te Teko before retiring to Bulwer Road 30 years ago.
