Discs and rollers at work on low-lying land at the south-west end of Awapuni Lagoon, preparing the ground for a planting of maize. Farther north, nearer Gisborne, there are large areas of salt-bound swamp land subject to a reclamation scheme which ultimately may provide 1000 acres of new grazing land. Control of the area has been formally vested in the Lands and Survey Department, and reports are being completed on the best methods by which this valuable asset may be realised.

Rare fish caught off Wainui Beach after eight-hour struggle was this 95lb eagle-ray. It was hooked on a 23lb nylon line by Mr S. W. Lane, using a conventional rod and reel. This type of ray, which is common in more northern waters, but not here, grows to about three feet in width, and is harmless except for the poisonous wound it can inflict with its spiny tail.
