One Hundred Years' Reading

This year the library celebrates one hundred years of service to the city. Located in various positions around Gisborne in that time, the library is now housed in a magnificent new building, the H.B. Williams Memorial Library. This was opened by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Ferguson two years ago, on April 7, 1967.

A display is also on in the library commemorating its centenary. Part of this includes a selection of old books on New Zealand flora and fauna.

All books have to be written and many manuscripts are typewritten. On loan from the museum is this Hammond typewriter made in 1875.

Of quaint interest is this very old gramophone, A far cry from today's talking books for the blind and weak of sight.
