Ultra-Modern Maternity Home Opened

The Cook Hospital Board's magnificent new maternity block on the new base hospital site in Ormond Road was opened on March 11 by the Minister of Health, Mr D. N. McKay. The gradual closing of other small maternity hospitals in the district has been with the opening of this new hospital in view.

Each mother and her new baby have their own room and all services in the hospital are streamlined to the 'nth degree to ensure every care for patients.

The finished new maternity block. In charge of the new home is Sister P. M. Swarbrick who is pictured with her parents in her own flat on the fourth floor of the building which houses the nursing staff. Sister Swarbrick's parents are Mr and Mrs O. Swarbrick, well known citizens and old identities of Gisborne.

The theatre is situated on the ground floor.

All rooms are private for mother and baby.

The sterilizing room ensures absolute cleanliness of all equipment.

Student nurses dispensing cheerfulness at the afternoon tea were Helen Norris, Georgina O'Brien, Joy Penberthy, Lois Wharehinga, Margaret Wright and Bronwyn-Anne Tonkin.

Three porters for the new block are Frank Boyle, John Purcell and Douglas Munro.
