Life Member

Along with four other members of the Poverty Bay Centre of the New Zealand Sheep Dog Trials Association Jim Griffin was recently made a life member of that organisation. The other four members were Messrs Eric Aylward, Ernie Robinson, Walter Hall and Mance Parkinson.

Jim Griffin (right) ran his first dog at Motu in 1914, and in those days the trials were big affairs.

Over the years Jim progressed from shepherd to manager. He was in charge of Pouturu Station for 12 years, and later was manager of Totara Station, also for 12 years. All this time he kept up his interest in the various trials throughout the country.

Born and bred in Mangapapa, Jim, now 76, went back to live in that suburb after retiring in 1956. He and his wife live at 12 Elm Street.

"Boy" was one of the best dogs owned by Jim. This dog was second in the North Island Sheep Dog Trials held at the Bay of Islands in 1935.
