Pictures from the Past

It was built by Mr G. S. Smith in 1889 on the Whakarau Road and was the original Post Office. It is now the property of Mrs K. H. Davis, daughter of Mr Smith. The picture was taken in 1908.

From Mrs N. E. Robb, 24 Chalmers Road, comes this picture of the first house built in the Motu Valley.

Taken about 60 years ago this picture shows members of the Corbett family at a Freezing Works' picnic held at Te Karaka. An old established family, the Corbetts have been connected with the Freezing Works for many years. The picture comes from Mr George Corbett, 6 Centennial Crescent.

From Mrs E. Trowell comes this picture of some of the delegates who went to the Conference of the National Council of Women held in Wellington in 1931. The delegates had to stay the night in Napier where they weren't very happy with the number of earthquakes felt during the night. This was not long before the devastating 'quake of February of that year. Mrs Trowell, in the back row at the right, and the late Mrs W. E. Goffe, in the front row at the left, were the delegates from Gisborne.
