The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (C.C.D.) was founded in 1560 and its aim is to organise education in Christian living for people of all ages. In New Zealand the emphasis at present is on children and about 15,000 are educated in the Auckland Diocese. The roll of the School of Religion in Gisborne is 235, including both primary and secondary children. There is a staff of 13 and classes are held every Monday night for children unable to attend Catholic Schools. The Confraternity is organised by a committee of seven laymen, with Father Hugh Smith as Chaplain, and has the assistance of 60 drivers who provide transport for the children. A group of Home Visitors maintains a link between home and school.
