Then And Now

It's a far cry from the days of the bullock wagon but that was the mode of transport of goods and chattels in Gisborne's early days. The change in the building on this page took place fundamentally in 1930, with the front modernisation in 1963.

The building, on the corner of Gladstone Road and Customhouse Quay, was originally owned by the Edward Murphy estate and built in the early 1870's. It was in turn leased to the Bank of New South Wales, Williams and Kettle, then purchased by Petties in 1929. The Farmers Trading Co., which took over the establishment in November, 1963, now owns the building which has a very modern interior supplying a wide range of goods.
